Carrying Forward What Our Elders Trusted

We are not a modern food manufacturer. We are passionate old-timers, raised on traditional foods and guided by family elders and custodians of the Zimbabwean savanna.

From dried covo leaves (mufushwa) to mopane worms (madora/amacimbi), every product is an authentic representation of Zimbabwean heritage — sustainably harvested, nothing added.

We do not invent health trends. We reclaim them.

— The Elders

The "Way Back" Strategy

We disrupt the modern health market by rejecting convenience culture and returning to what worked.

The Unbundled Ethos

We strip away fillers and synthetic flavours. Pure, traditional foods exactly as nature — and our grandmothers — intended.

The "Boil" Standard

Our dried covo and cowpea leaves follow the traditional 10-minute boil — functional, flavourful, and steeped in savanna wisdom.

The Second Life

Zero waste: our tonics and mufushwa can be re-brewed or stirred into porridges, just as our grandmothers did before us.

The Heritage Portfolio

Four pillars of authentic Zimbabwean excellence — each rooted in tradition, each crafted with care.

Our Four Commitments

Authentic

Guided by elders, true to tradition and Zimbabwean heritage.

Traceable

Every product traced to its source — farm, forest or savanna.

Sustainable

Harvested in harmony with the land, preserving it for future generations.

Potent

Preserved by time-tested tradition — no additives, full nutrition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mufushwa and how do I cook it?

Mufushwa is the Shona word for sun-dried leafy vegetables — most commonly dried covo (Zimbabwean rape), pumpkin leaves, or munyemba (cowpea leaves). To cook, simply simmer in boiling water for 10–15 minutes, drain, then prepare as you would fresh greens with onion, tomato and peanut butter or groundnut powder. Mufushwa retains its nutrients beautifully through the traditional sun-drying process.

Do you ship Zimbabwean food to the UK and South Africa?

Yes. Origin Zim ships traditional Zimbabwean heritage foods to the UK, South Africa and Zimbabwean diaspora communities worldwide. Our dried products — mufushwa, mopane worms, heritage grains and herbal superfoods — are packaged to comply with international food import requirements.

What are mopane worms and are they sustainable?

Mopane worms (known as madora in Shona or amacimbi in Ndebele) are the caterpillars of the Emperor moth, harvested from mopane trees in southern Africa. They are a traditional Zimbabwean high-protein food — richer in protein than beef — and have been sustainably harvested by local communities for generations. Our mopane worms are wild-harvested following elder-guided seasonal practices.

Are your products organic and free from additives?

All Origin Zim products are 100% natural with no preservatives, artificial colours or flavours. Our heritage grains are grown without synthetic pesticides on small family farms. Our dried vegetables are sun-dried the traditional way — no sulphites added. We believe the traditional method is the best method.

What are the health benefits of baobab powder and moringa?

Baobab powder from the baobab tree (known as mbuyu in Shona) is exceptionally high in vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants. Moringa powder, from the moringa tree (mvee), is considered one of Africa's most nutrient-dense plants — rich in iron, calcium, vitamins A, C and E, and all essential amino acids. Both have been used medicinally by Zimbabwean communities for centuries.
